"We hold these truths to be self-evident" is like "it goes without saying." Something or some situation is making your point necessary to say. It is NOT evident to something or someone. Regardless of how true it is, sometimes it needs to be said. And said often.

In the face of adversity and even, sadly, death.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.

The first truth of our Declaration of Independence was and sometimes, is, not so evident.

Usually with when a "day" is established, you can add "happy" to the front of it and wish someone a nice day (or a nice sale).

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, though, that doesn't seem right. So, instead, do something nice. From a service project to a smile for a stranger to paying for someone's order in the drive through. Anything you can think of to brighten someone's day. And don't just do it today.

I bet someone will say, "It goes without saying, but thank you."

Today's feature is Just Baked Cupcakes.

I know I use the word 'love' a lot. I love this and I really love that
and I superduperheadoverheels love the other thing. But I L.O.V.E. Just Baked Cupcakes.
I don't know if you know this, but I have a crazy sweet tooth. I mean, it is just rotten.
(Don't know how my teeth aren't rotten. Hee hee.)
So, I have tried my fair share of cupcakes (and then some). From Vegas to New York,
I have blazed a cupcake trail that Martha, Sylvia, Duff, Karen and Alan would be proud of.
But you know what? Nothing beats Just Baked.
When a friend told me about them earlier in the year,
I was game to try (see above re: sweet tooth),
but did not expect taste sensation I encountered.

(I think I might need to lay off the caffeine. I'm getting a little verbose.)

Anyway, they are fabulous and here is a little more about Just Baked
and the team behind those delicious creations: Chris and Missy Wallace.

How long have you been in business?
We opened for business on November 12, 2010

From the cupcakes to the coffee we serve only the best ... all of our cupcakes are
made fresh daily in small batches using only the finest ingredients.
You can be assured that your cupcakes will be freshly baked just hours
before your purchase. We use only the finest ingredients such as sweet cream butter,
pure cane sugar, unbleached flour, pure Madagascar vanilla and all natural flavorings.
We serve Malabar Gold™ espresso which is a premium European espresso.
It is roasted in the "light" Northern Italian fashion and is mellow and low in acid.
The crema is deep reddish brown, fantastically rich, plentiful and persistent;
it is smooth and rich and syrup like. We offer everything from a" regular latte"
to the more complex "Salted Caramel Latte," using our house made caramel sauce.

Best thing about having your own business?
Our favorite thing about our business is the smile that is seems to bring
to everyone that comes in the door. Sometimes a customer will come in and
you can just tell that they are not having a good day.... they will order a cupcake
and latte and within a few minutes they are smiling and forgetting
about their troubles. We also really enjoy creating the cupcake flavors ... we will
see a certain chocolate bar or dessert and say "that should be a cupcake"
the very next week you are likely to see it on our menu.

2011 Fall Minis! :: Lake Norman Photographer

What minis are:
Time to focus on just one goal. For example, your goal is individual images of the children. Once we have our goal, we can go for something else like a a family shot if there is time.

Minis are for up to 4 immediate family members. For example, 4 children OR a family of 4.

They are not just for children. Couples can schedule minis, too!

They are a great time to supplement last year's session if you have older children and haven't had a chance to get them photographed this year.

Since the nature of minis is short and sweet, they work best when children are old enough to listen to simple directions.

What minis aren't:
Clothing changes and minis don't go together.

Families with small children who are not sitting unassisted will need more time than minis allow if they want images of their child alone or with other young children.

If you'd like more than 4 immediate family members photographed, booking two minis back to back or a full portrait session is for you.

Minis aren't a place to be late. The reason minis are such a great price is because I am able to schedule several at one sitting. We'll need to start each session on time.

Mini FAQ:
Do you just sell the disc?
I offer many products! I've found the mid-resolution files to be the best value for clients wanting image files or several prints sized 8x10 or smaller. Larger prints and custom items like albums, storyboards and mini books are ordered with me, and I'd love to create an heirloom piece for you. The 2011 holiday order deadline is Sunday, December 4.

I don't know how to order pictures! Help!
For my clients who purchase image files, I recommend www.mpix.com for their prints. Mpix is easy to use, and I can help if you need it. Mpix is the consumer division of a professional lab, and the quality is excellent. Protect your investment by using a reputable, photographic printer.

What about Christmas cards? Don't you do them anymore?
Oh, yes! I offer many custom cards for any occasion. I've found most clients scheduling minis wanted more image files instead of fewer files with holiday cards and then they ordered cards separately. Cards are available in several designs and sizes. Everyone who orders cards gets tons of raves on them! Call or email to for more details.

What if we have more than 10 pictures? Can I get them all?
Yes! Although, in our 20 minute session, a yield of 8-10 images is average. Sometimes, it's 8. Other times, it might be more. If we do have more than 10 and you want them all, mid-res files over 10 are $25 each. This is a special holiday mini session rate and does not apply to other purchases.

I can't make it on that day. Can you do another one?
Yes! I offer mini sessions year round for $200.

Ah, fall . . . . the time of year when I stop getting crazy looks for buying and/or making pumpkin goodies. Because, now, I'm not the only one. Not the only one standing in the produce section or the baking aisle lost in thought about the endless possibilities. Okay, maybe I am the only one who does *that.*

Hee hee! I crack myself up sometimes. So, yeah, I'm a little obsessed. To share my obsession and make me feel a little less like a freak show, here are some of my favorite pumpkin recipes!

The two best Pumpkin Muffin recipes on the planet (yes, I've tried them all...or it seems like I have). Also great for bread.

Pumpkin Pie Dip : This is amazing with gingersnaps and/or Granny Smith slices

Remembering : Personal

We're all reflecting...all remembering.

Remembering the nearly 3000 people lost, whether we knew them or not.

Remembering those who, against the human instinct of self-preservation,
went into, not out of the towers.

Remembering the Pentagon and Flight 93..."Let's roll." I still get chills every time I think about it. Remembering where we were, what we were doing, who we were with on September 11, 2001.

I was home with a 7 week old baby and a 17 month old toddler, still adjusting to our little family's new normal. My husband called from his office uptown and said, "You'd better turn on the tv. A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center." Like everyone else, I was transfixed by what I saw. Disbelief and horror set in as the second plane struck and the rest of the tragedy unfolded.
It became clear that this was not a horrible accident.

I wanted my husband home with me right THEN. Second only to NYC in the banking industry, uptown Charlotte was on the quickly made perceived threat of attack list, and he.was.there.

I felt real fear for the first time that day. And as scared as I was, I felt even worse for having loved ones to be afraid for. My family was alive.

Giving blood, the one thing so many people did because it was all we could do, was off the table since I had a transfusion when Sam was born. So, I held my family close, talked to family I couldn't get to and prayed. It was natural to pray for the victims, but, each night, I made myself pray for everyone lost that day. Everyone. For the families of all lives lost that day. All of them.

Teri Kidz Consignment Sale became a reality almost 13 years ago. I was homeschooling and trying to figure out a way to earn some extra money for curriculum and materials needs for my children. I was consigning at a sale in Huntersville and realized there was not a seasonal sale here in the Mooresville. Organization and Administration is my gift so I took the plunge in my own business. In 1998 we held our 1st sale in my garage with 50 consignors. So many Moms wanted to be part of our sale that I decided to expand and hold sales in empty buildings here in Mooresville. We are now at our limit of 300 consignors for this Fall Sale.

How long have you been in business?

Our sale has grown into more than a business. The sale has become a huge ministry to so many. We tithe our personal earnings to the Statesville Pregnancy Center; do care boxes for MANY families who are struggling, unsold clothing donations from our consignors go to the Mooresville Christian Mission. So our success is really the community success also. Why pay retail on clothing and kidz items when you can get it at a fraction of cost at our sale? All items are inspected carefully. Quality is #1 for our sale not the quantity of items brought at the sale. Last sale we had over 50,000 kidz items tagged in!

Favorite thing about your business?

Being part of a business that gives back to the Community! My husband , Robert and I can truly say we have built a Consignment Family in the past 13 years.

Ashley and Rachel, two busy Moms, hand-paint 2 inch wooden peg dolls with

the letters of the alphabet on their chests. The dolls represent all races

and cultures. Sometimes customers request special custom orders (We love

those!) where we get to make the dolls resemble children, match bedrooms,

Inspiration : Frames!

This new product has been in the works for a while, so imagine my surprise and delight when I saw some like ours
in Jewel's son's nursery (Kim Lewis Designs). I just love her!

And you will love these! Each frame is hand-crafted, custom made and slightly distressed to give it character.
Your walls will thank you!

These frames are ready to hang with wall bumpers and either sawteeth or metal loop hangers, depending on the size. They come without acrylic or glass to let the texture of your print or artwork shine. These would also be great with metallic and palette knife prints!

Here are the designs. There are 10, and I have a sample of each that I'll bring to our view+choose appointment.

Here are the color choices! Beautiful! I have 10 different colors on my samples, but you can choose any colors you'd like!

How long have you been in business?

Lake Norman Macaroni Kid has been active for almost a year now. I started it in August of last year, and my partner, Cindy Williams joined me in April.

We are hyper-local. Charlotte is a very spread out city. Those of us living in Lake Norman are not going to drive to South Charlotte to find an activity for our kids. We list events close to home. I have 5 kids ranging in age from 1-12, so I am constantly looking for fun things to do! Our site gives parents one place to go to find awesome ways to entertain our kids.

Best thing about having your own business?

The best part of owning my own business is that I can set my own hours and stay home with my kids. Cindy and I are able to balance being in and out of town and can take turns pulling the heavier load. It works out great!

The Bradford Store is definitely a favorite in my family! We shop all the local farmers' markets. Cindy also runs Green Jeans Consignment Sale with her sister--that is a great event!

Buying local is important in so many ways. With our tough economic climate, buying local helps to keep money in our area. Buying local produce is so much healthier. I try to teach my kids the importance of buying local!

Inspiration: Gorgeous Stacked Frames

My children are just done being photographer's kids. I think I ruined them when they were little. We went out yesterday, under the guise of needing to test new equipment (don't judge), and they wanted to be anywhere but there.

I'm blaming it on the heat.

I finally let them just be. Those usually end up being my favorites.

Tuesday Tip : Watermelon Granita

When I saw this recipe on Pioneer Woman, I knew I had to try it.

(1) I love watermelon. I mean, I reeeaaalllly love watermelon.

(2) Like Ree said, it is just insanely hot.

So, I followed the easy steps, and oh my, it is perfection. It tastes, well, it tastes like watermelon (see number 1), and it cools like nobody's business. I've made this twice in 6 days, and when it's gone, I'll make it again.

Do yourself a favor, and make it today.

I cut the sugar to 1/4 cup the second time I made it, and I'm going to cut it again the next time. It's a really small amount, so it's not a big deal, but if it tastes as great without it, then I'll leave it out.

I also put some in a soda glass and added Fresca. It's a Watermelon Fizz!

If one so desired, one might add additional liquids to this delicious concoction.

This week, I'm thrilled to talk with Ellen Wilamoski of Sugar and Spice Scrubs! I love her scrubs! My current favorite is Cherry Almond, but every one I've used has been wonderful!

1) Tell us about your business in a few words.

My husband inspired me to start my own sugar scrub business after making gifts for my children's teachers last holiday season. I made them each a lavender sugar scrub and received so much positive feed back. I make the sugar scrubs by hand with a mixture of all natural oils, sugar, soap coloring and I have over 40 different scents to chose from. They are great for exfoliating and moisturizing your skin.

2) How long have you been in business?

I started researching in December and launched my business in early February 2011.

3) Why should people shop with you?

Not only are my sugar scrubs affordable, but they come in a variety of scents that anyone would love. They make great gifts and are so affordable. My guests love trying out the different scents whenever they visit.

4) Best thing about having your own business?

I would have to say the best thing is that I can make my own schedule. I have been a stay at home mom for over 6 years and didn't want to give up my time with my kids so I work on my sugar scrub business more at night, after the kids are in bed.

5)Favorite local businesses/places to shop:

I usually shop local craft fairs like the Mooresville Artisan Market. I also love checking out the items in Black Lion and Sweet Tooth in Huntersville.

6) Why do you prefer to buy local?

Since starting my own business I tend to buy more from local businesses. Especially when I buy gifts for people. I never know what someone already has so why not get them a one of a kind, handmade item. Same goes for restaurants, I like supporting the local business owners.

7)Anything to add?

I also have an all Natural line, made with a mixture of all natural oils, sugar, no coloring and pure essential oils. I am also excited to announce that I have started working on a COCKTAIL line. I will be adding scents like Mojito, Fuzzy Navel, Sangria, Pina Coloda, Margarita and Gin Martini. The cocktail line will be available starting July 29th.

My family and I went to Washington, DC for Spring Break, and it was fantastic! I've had lots of people say they are going soon and ask what we'd recommend. So, we here we go!

We stayed in Arlington (specifically Crystal City) and took the Metro into DC. The quick walk to the Metro from our hotel was shorter than the walk, cab ride or Metro ride to a hotel in DC from any place we went. Bonus #1: The boys loved the Metro. Bonus #2: I loved The Crystal City Shops. Not so much for the shopping, but for all the restaurants! It was great after a long (but fun!) day to have a nice little ride on the Metro to relax and then just be able to walk into a restaurant without the wait that I'm sure we would have had at restaurants closer to the city. That said, there were a few DC eateries that I wanted to try. Several friends recommended Ben's Chili Bowl and Oyamel, and I think lunch at the Market would be fun. You go, and tell me about them!

On the advice of a friend, we went to the Mall at night. Makes sense when you think about it and I would like to think it would have eventually occurred to us, but it wasn't on the agenda until she said it. It needs to be on your agenda! It is really spectacular to see everything all lit up. We did this on our first night after we arrived that afternoon in Arlington, so it was the first time we saw the Mall. It really was a beautiful start to our trip. I thought seeing the lights on the Washington Monument was my favorite until I saw the Lincoln Memorial. Every word I start to type doesn't do it justice.

On our first full day, we went to the Museum of Natural History. We started off in the Castle with a video tour by Ben Stiller. Not necessary, but it was fun, fast and runs on a feed so there's no waiting. Cause I know you want to jump on over to the Museum of Natural History and get started! No real standouts, but that's just because it was all great. Just see it everything.

The two (yes, two!) Air and Space Museums are not to be missed. The first is The National Air and Space Museum on the Mall. Wouldn't you know, they have so much eye candy that they ran out of room and opened the Udvar-Hazy Center near the Dulles Airport. Go to both if you can. We know you'll already be at the Mall, so that one's easy, but the new center is so worth the short drive. How do you choose between the original Wright Flyer (mall) and the Space Shuttle Enterprise (Dulles)? Or between the Spirit of St. Louis (mall) and the Enola Gay (Dulles)? Or (last one) between the Apollo 11 Command Module (mall) or a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (Dulles)? If you wanted to be an astronaut when you were little like me or if you've ever flown or if you ever made a paper airplane or ever seen a plane, both museums are on the must see list.

My husband and children went to The International Spy Museum while my mother, father, brother-in-law and I went to the National Portrait Gallery across the street. All I know about the Spy Museum is that it was awesome and my children were given the code names Colin and Billy. I must not be given any other information for my own safety. The National Portrait Gallery was just amazing. If you go for nothing other than the American Presidents Exhibit, then it will be worth it. The rest of the museum is just as fantastic, though, so plan to spend some time there. The White House is close, so we walked to it from the Metro and then headed to the museums. It was great to see the city up close. Bonus: We came across this great courtyard that was a marble map of the city, complete with the building footprints of the White House and Capital! Kudos to Ashton for pointing it out!

Since this is getting long, here is a list of other recommendations:

National Museum of American History : I won't bore you with details. Everything we saw was great, and there was still so much more that we didn't see!

National Museum of the American Indian : although we didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked

Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden : there are two Rodins, as well as several other beautiful works. We did not go into the museum, just the garden.

War Memorials:

World War II

Vietman Veterans

Korean War Veterans

Presidential Memorials:

Washington

Thomas Jefferson

And my two favorites: Lincoln and FDR. If you see nothing else while in DC, see these two memorials.

We're all familiar with the Lincoln Memorial. If you've held a penny or a $5 bill, you've seen it. That makes it no less amazing to see it in person. It is really beautiful and even when surrounded by throngs of people, very serene.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, however, I had not seen. Our 32rd president is my favorite, so I was beyond excited about going there. There are four uncovered outdoor rooms, each representing a term of his presidency. There are varying degrees of water movement, sculptures, engraved quotes and stonework, each laced with symbolism. A statue of Eleanor Roosevelt is here, and this is the only presidential memorial to include a first lady. Side note: No Ordinary Time by Doris Kearns Goodwin is a wonderful read, and one of the best I've read on these two amazing people.

Things we didn't see/do, but wanted to:

National Building Musuem : some members of our party chose the spy museum instead of the Lego Architecture Exhibit

Old Post Office Tower : wonderful views of the city, closed at 4:45, not at 8 like we were told.

Reflecting Pool : under construction until Spring 2012

Arlington Cemetery : We just ran out of time. We saw it from the interstate, though!

Pentagon : closed indefinitely. We saw it from the interstate, too, and it is massive.

Things we skipped:

Going inside the Washington Monument : tickets either had a fee for ordering in advance online or a long line early in the morning. We'll do it next time.

Tours of the White House and Capital :We didn't even schedule after looking at everything we wanted to do while we were planning. Next time for those, too.

National Zoo : As great as it probably is, we have the best zoo I have ever been to, The North Carolina Zoo (over 500 acres of natural habitats!), close to us, so we passed.

Washington National Cathedral : no one mentioned wanting to see this, so I didn't even add it the queue. It will be next time treat.

It was an amazing trip, and I can't wait to go back! Neither can my boys. They started asking on the way home if we could go again for next year's Spring Break!

I hope all the moms out there had a wonderful Mother's Day! My boys worked hard on a surprise all morning, and I was instructed to go in my room for them to set it up. When it was time to come out, I was greeted with homemade confetti (complete with fan!), a banner, flowers, cards and peppermint patties! We played cards and then Knockout in the gorgeous sun. Dinner on the porch rounded out a fantastic day!

I was so excited when L suggested shooting uptown for our session. We had to reschedule for weather once, and then it was looking iffy on our new date. We went for it, and I'm so glad we did! We finished up just in time - thunder was rolling in as we were leaving.

Is there any way that she could be any more beautiful? Nope, didn't think so.

This is a collage I put together for a client's family session, and I just love it. This one is 30x30, but can be 20x20 if that is a better fit for your wall. I don't recommend any smaller than 20x20 for collages because the images will be too small unless you are right in front of it.

This family and I met for a session in Mooresville on a lovely fall day (yes, fall!), and I had such a great time with them.
In addition to being lots of fun and super nice, they are completely gorgeous!

Side note: For clients getting ready for their sessions, take a look at Jenny's fabulous clothing selections. This is a great example of how complementary colors and different textures can be neutral and still look fantastic. I have some clients say that they don't want a lot of bright colors, and this fits the bill perfectly.

Cornelius Newborn Photographer : My Birthday Buddy

I was introduced to this little man by my friend Kathleen. His dad Clayton is her business partner in LKN Images and LKN Sports. Shooting for other photographers is fun! This bundle of sweetness was born on my birthday (January 9, by the way, if anyone wants to get us a gift)! At 2 lbs 14 oz and several weeks early, he is a little fighter. We had his newborn session on March 18, just a few days after his due date. He is doing great, and is just the cutest thing! Congratulations, Clayton and Kitira!

I have known these cuties forever. Mom and I met when E was 4 months old! I am proud to call her my friend and have had the pleasure of photographing her sweet children for the past several Christmases.

On that note, can I tell you a secret? (even though I guess it won't be a secret anymore!!) I do a great big happy dance every time I get calls for repeat sessions. I mean "huge smile, funky arms, people wondering what is going on" happy dance. I'm not lying when I say that I love getting to you know you, but that's just my end of it. For you to pick up that phone or send that email, you're saying "let's do it again!" and I am humbled by that trust every single time.

From Candy Howard Photography: Styled sessions are one of my favorite things to shoot, and I loved the idea of doing one for this year’s Valentine minis. A vintage theme just seemed to fit in with Valentine’s Day perfectly! I had some of the props already (the quilts, the soda shop chair and the penny candy jar) and made some others. A friend told me about this t-shirt pom poms tutorial (http://diaryofacraftaholic.blogspot.com/2011/01/valentines-day-door-decor.html), and I made the bunting from shirts and baker’s twine. The children were sooooo cute and had fun with the props. Everything came together the way I had hoped, and I just love the way it turned out!

I am a paper planner kind of gal. I just am. Don't try to convert me. This year, I decided to make my own planner and add just what I need and some images, too. Well, it was so much fun! I found some gems that I had forgotten about. I will usually take what I need from a session with my boys and then move on. For this project, though, I needed 54 images. Doesn't sound like much when my kids are 10 and 9, right? I searched all our files and even went all the way back to my film days filing through scans and negatives looking for just the right images. What I found was the dirt on my eldest's face after a day outside. The smile on my youngest during a his first time on a tire swing. For whatever reason, I had passed these by. Others are forgotten favorites that now live on my computer. I am ashamed to say that only one of the these images is in my house. Not for long. I am going to practice what I preach with these forgotten treats. I tell clients who purchase files to use them, don't just leave them in their case. So, photographers, it's not enough to make time to shoot your own loved ones. You need to enjoy those images, too. Make them come to life. I am looking at no less than a few canvases and that sand-heart-shadow-deal is going to be a big print with a metallic palette knife texture

(a-ma-zing!). And a book. Definitely a book.

And my planner? Is awesome. Pen and all. Howard out.

Perspective

We've all done it - heard bad news and rush to cling to the ones we love. We all say things like that put into perspective what's really important in life. I want perspective without tragedy. I want to walk the fine line of treasuring every gift and knowing it can be over any second. Yesterday, I heard the trials of life compared to lifting weights. When you lift, you are actually breaking muscle fibers. Doesn't sound very fun, does it? But when the muscles heal, they are stronger for the weight that was put on them. We are stronger for the trials we face. A friend who was dealt several tragic blows within a short time told me, very peacefully, that she felt the first two helped prepare her for the last and most difficult. I was awestruck at her ability to see that. That is not to say that she or any of us will not suffer again. There is no answer to why things happen. But we can look at the what and know that it is not in vain. We are stronger. And hopefully, closer to that line. Living each day like the gift it is without fearing tomorrow. Perspective without tragedy.
